CV CiteVerify

Never file a brief with a citation that doesn’t say what you think it says.

CiteVerify reads the actual opinion behind every cite in your brief and tells you when the cited authority doesn’t support the proposition. Plus catches hallucinated cases, format errors, AI artifacts, and negative-treatment warnings — all in one report, in under a minute.

What other tools miss

“…limitations period applies under Whitfield, 132 Wash. App. 878, 134 P.3d 1203 (2006).”
✗ Does not support the proposition The cited Whitfield opinion is a Washington state case addressing HIV-exposure assault charges, equal protection, and consent. It says nothing about RSA 625:8 or any statute-of-limitations period. Westlaw Quick Check would mark this “valid.” CiteVerify caught it because it read the actual opinion.

Four layers of verification

Most cite-checkers stop at “does this case exist.” CiteVerify keeps reading.

Validity

Every citation cross-checked against CourtListener’s 10M+ opinion corpus. Hallucinated cases caught immediately — not relayed back as “valid.”

Proposition Support

The killer feature. CiteVerify reads the actual opinion and tells you when the cited authority doesn’t support the sentence carrying the cite. Catches overstatement, partial support, and the “real case, wrong proposition” failure mode.

Bluebook Format

Reporter abbreviations, spacing, court abbreviations, and case-name formatting per Bluebook 22nd ed. Rule 6.1(a). Suggested corrections one-click copyable.

Treatment Status

Walked through CourtListener’s citation graph for negative treatment — overruled, abrogated, criticized, or questioned by later courts. Surfaces the most relevant warning case for each cite.

! AI Artifact Detection

Scans for unfilled placeholders ([INSERT CASE NAME], TODO:), AI self-reference (“as an AI language model”), and refusal language that LLM-assisted drafts sometimes leave behind.

§ Statute Verification

U.S.C., C.F.R., and 50-state criminal codes verified against official source text. Catches wrong section numbers and repealed statutes.

vs. the alternatives

The proposition-support check is where CiteVerify differentiates. Other tools verify the cite exists; CiteVerify verifies it says what you claim it says.

One bad citation can end a career.

Attorneys have been sanctioned for filing briefs with fabricated citations and propositions that don’t match the cited authority. CiteVerify catches both — before the brief reaches the court.
